Radian is a music trio formed in 1996 by Martin Brandlmayr, Stefan Németh and John Norman. In spite of ongoing trends, the band developed its idiosyncratic style, aiming at a precise and condensed form, and a seamless transition from analogue to digital, from acoustic instruments to electronics. Their earliest self-description reads like this:„Positing a field of tension between electronic and non-electronic instruments. Extracted from that principle is a self-defined microcosmos where minimal shifts and modulations occurring within the structure of timbre and rhythm determine the actual musical dynamic. The individual levels are laminated together, a stacking of various rough surfaces, into a unified sound+noise+texture.“In 1998 Radian released their first selftitled EP – a live recording of their second show – on the Viennese Rhiz label. Welcomed by the experimental music crowd, the band started to have numerous live appearences on international festivals. Being slow, but careful workers, their first real long-player named „TG11“ (Mego-Rhiz), came out in 2000. It was probably their most minimalistic approach to music to date. In 2002 Radian signed on Thrill Jockey records (Chicago, USA) and produced the first of a trilogy of albums („Rec.Extern“ 2002, „Juxtaposition“ 2004, „Chimeric“ 2009). Two of these releases have been recorded and mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise)  and the last album was realized in cooperation with the band´s live engineer, Kassian Troyer. Although each album displays a singular concept and imprint, the band sustained their self-defined principles throughout their own history. The current line-up of Radian consists of Martin Brandlmayr, John Norman and Martin Siewert.www.thrilljockey.com
